Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Reunite for The Rip — with Beards, Banter, and a Gritty New Thriller

Affleck and Damon debut first footage of their gritty new Netflix thriller The Rip, trading laughs over beards and delivering a tale of cash, corruption, and fractured loyalty in Miami.

At Netflix Tudum 2025, Affleck teases Damon’s Odysseus beard while debuting footage from their crime drama The Rip, a gripping tale of loyalty, cash, and chaos hitting Netflix January 16, 2026.

Ben Affleck Jokes About Matt Damon’s Gray Beard at Netflix Tudum Event as They Premiere The Rip Footage

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Hollywood’s most enduring duo, brought their signature blend of wit and intensity to Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event, where they unveiled the first official footage from their upcoming crime-thriller The Rip.

Appearing onstage together, Affleck couldn’t resist poking fun at Damon’s rugged new look — the long, gray beard he’s currently growing out for his role as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. “I trusted Matt would shave the beard before Tudum — and here we are,” Affleck quipped, earning laughter from the audience.

Despite the lighthearted banter, the event carried major weight for fans of the longtime friends and collaborators, who last shared the screen in 2023’s Air. This time, they’re teaming up again — as actors and producers through their company Artists Equity — to deliver The Rip, a high-stakes thriller set in the underbelly of Miami.

A First Look at The Rip

Scheduled for release on January 16, 2026, The Rip boasts a star-studded cast including Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino, and Néstor Carbonell.

The story centers on a team of Miami cops who discover millions in cash hidden in a decrepit stash house. As the fortune tempts outside forces and internal loyalties begin to crack, the line between justice and betrayal blurs.

“This movie takes a look at the things people will do for money,” Affleck explained during Netflix’s January 2025 “Next on Netflix” showcase. “It’s a compelling, complicated human drama that also hues to these elements of cinema that people have loved forever.”

Describing The Rip as “Heat meets Narc meets Training Day,” Affleck promised a “fun, engaging ride that keeps you guessing.”

Inspired by Real-Life Corruption and Classic Cop Films

Director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, Narc) was inspired by a personal connection: a friend who served as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami-Dade Police Department and experienced a situation not unlike the events depicted in The Rip.

“This is inspired in part by his life and by my enduring love for those classic ’70s cop thrillers that valued character and interpersonal relationships,” Carnahan told Tudum. He cited Serpico, Prince of the City, and Heat as key influences.

Carnahan praised working with Affleck and Damon, calling the experience “the best of both worlds” — a creative and supportive process where the actors, as studio heads, gave him the freedom and backing he needed to tell a bold, character-driven story.

Damon’s Beard Has a Mythic Purpose

While Affleck was quick to jab at Damon’s silver beard, there’s a heroic reason behind the look. Damon is currently immersed in filming The Odyssey with director Christopher Nolan, playing the legendary Greek hero Odysseus. In February, Universal shared the first official image of Damon in full costume, and set photos released in March revealed an intense physical transformation — including defined abs and that now-famous beard.

A Hollywood Bromance That Still Delivers

From their Oscar-winning breakout Good Will Hunting to Air and now The Rip, Affleck and Damon continue to bring layered, intelligent storytelling to the screen — with their unique bond still fueling the magic.

Their Netflix collaboration marks another high-profile moment in a friendship that spans decades and continues to shape modern cinema.

The Rip premieres January 16, 2026 exclusively on Netflix.
