The Three Men and a Baby star cites irreconcilable differences as reason for split; couple had prenuptial agreement in place

Steve Guttenberg and Wife Emily Smith Call It Quits After Six Years

Steve Guttenberg, beloved star of Three Men and a Baby and Police Academy, has officially filed for divorce from his wife, Emily Guttenberg (née Smith), after six years of marriage. According to court documents filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday, the 66-year-old actor cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the couple’s split.

The date of separation is listed as “TBD,” and the filing confirms that the couple had a prenuptial agreement in place that will govern the division of community assets and debts. Guttenberg has agreed to pay spousal support, while also requesting that each party be responsible for their own legal fees.

No comment has yet been made by Guttenberg’s representatives.

A Love Story That Began with a Blind Date

Guttenberg and Emily Smith, a news anchor, first met in 2014 thanks to a blind date arranged by CBS New York reporter Scott Rapoport. Despite taking two months to coordinate, their first meeting proved successful—they moved in together the following year. By December 2016, they were engaged, sharing the happy news on Facebook, and tied the knot in a small ceremony in Malibu in January 2019.

In a 2017 interview with the Daily Beast, Guttenberg described Smith as “the real deal,” praising her solid character, balance, and values. “She makes me a better person, which I really like,” he said at the time. “She’s a very classy lady… her value system is terrific, and her character and integrity, and sense of humor… she’s a really nice lady.”

A History of Compassion and Connection

Guttenberg was previously married to model and actress Denise Bixler from 1988 to 1992. Known for his down-to-earth nature, he made headlines earlier this year for his altruistic efforts during the Los Angeles wildfires. As emergency vehicles struggled to navigate the Pacific Palisades, Guttenberg stepped up to help move cars and clear paths for first responders.

“In a crisis, always remember that you’re part of a community,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “You just can’t walk by [someone in need]. You have to help them.”

As Guttenberg navigates this personal chapter, fans remember him not only for his iconic comedic roles but also for his heart, resilience, and generosity.
