Despite an ambiguous fate in Chapter 4, Reeves is set to reprise his iconic role.
Keanu Reeves is officially stepping back into the action-packed world of John Wick as Lionsgate confirmed John Wick: Chapter 5 during CinemaCon on Tuesday. The beloved actor and producer will reunite with franchise director Chad Stahelski, as well as producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, for another thrilling chapter in the globally successful series.
A Story Worth Telling
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, assured fans that the return of Reeves and the creative team signals an exciting new direction for the saga. “Keanu, Chad, Basil, and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” Fogelson stated. “We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next.”
An Ambiguous Fate
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) left audiences debating the fate of the legendary assassin. Following a climactic duel with Bill Skarsgård’s Marquis de Gramont, Wick appeared to succumb to his injuries, his dog later seen looking back at his grave. However, Stahelski previously revealed that an alternate ending showed Wick alive, leaving room for speculation. “We had a different ending,” Stahelski shared in an interview with Empire in 2023. “We shot an ending where you actually saw John Wick at the end of the movie. So it was very clear that he was still alive. The audiences we tested with absolutely preferred the ambiguous ending.”

Expanding the John Wick Universe
CinemaCon also brought additional exciting news for John Wick fans. A spin-off film centered on Donnie Yen’s character, Caine, is set to begin production in Hong Kong later this year. Yen, a martial arts icon, will not only star in the film but also direct, adding his signature action expertise to the project.
Meanwhile, an animated prequel film exploring Wick’s early years and his infamous Impossible Task is in development. Reeves will serve as a producer alongside Stahelski, Iwanyk, and Lee. Directed by Shannon Tindle and written by Vanessa Taylor, the anime aims to expand the John Wick mythology in bold new ways. “To have the opportunity to develop a John Wick anime seems to be the perfect progression for the John Wick world,” Stahelski remarked. “Anime holds the potential to expand our world, our characters, and our action in ways unimaginable before.”
What’s Next for the Franchise?
While John Wick: Chapter 5 does not yet have a release date, fans won’t have to wait too long to revisit the universe. Ballerina, a John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas, is set to hit theaters on June 6.
With Reeves officially returning to the fold, the John Wick saga continues to redefine action cinema. Stay tuned for more details as production on John Wick: Chapter 5 moves forward.
