The actor reflects on his daughter’s bold decision to shave her head in protest during her “Whip My Hair” tour.
Will Smith is looking back on a defining moment in his daughter Willow Smith’s early music career—one that he now sees as a powerful act of self-expression and independence.
In the new documentary Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood, Smith recounts an unforgettable experience during Willow’s 2010 Whip My Hair tour, when she decided to take drastic action to make her voice heard.
“I’m Done, Daddy”
At just 10 years old, Willow had taken the music world by storm with her hit single Whip My Hair and was on tour with Justin Bieber. But during a performance in Dublin, Ireland, she stunned her father with a candid confession.
“I’ll never forget, we were in Dublin. Willow comes off stage, and she was like, ‘I’m done, Daddy,’” Smith recalled. At first, he mistook her words for excitement. “I was like, ‘Yeah, baby, that was a great show!’ And she said, ‘No, no, I mean I’m done! I’m ready to go home!’”
Smith explained to her that they still had commitments to fulfill. “I was like, ‘Well, no, you can’t go home, sweetie. You promised Mr. Jay-Z that you were gonna do these 30 days of this tour.’ And she said, ‘No, Daddy, you promised Mr. Jay-Z.’”
The conversation left an impression on Smith, particularly when Willow challenged him directly. “She looked at me—I’ll never forget the look in her eyes—and she said, ‘It doesn’t matter to you that I’m finished, Daddy?’”

A Bold Act of Defiance
That night, with her mother Jada Pinkett Smith away, Willow made a decision that would leave her father speechless.
“The next morning, she came out, and she had shaved her head bald,” Smith revealed. “In the middle of her Whip My Hair tour, she had shaved her head bald. And it was like a magical moment. I was like, ‘Got it.’”
Reclaiming Her Voice
For Willow, shaving her head was about regaining control. In a 2022 interview with The Guardian, she reflected on the moment, saying, “I felt like I had no control… I felt so powerless. But because I was so young, I didn’t have enough experience for people to trust my opinions. So I just said, ‘I can’t do this.'”
Years later, she admitted that she held some resentment toward her parents for pushing her into a career she wasn’t ready for. On a 2018 episode of Red Table Talk, she told her mother, “I definitely had to forgive you and Daddy for that whole Whip My Hair thing. It was mostly Daddy because he was so harsh at certain times… It was a couple of years, honestly, trying to regain trust for not feeling like I was being listened to or like no one cared how I felt.”
A Lesson in Parenting
For Smith, the experience was a turning point in his approach to parenting, realizing that listening to his children’s voices mattered just as much as guiding them.
Willow has since carved out her own artistic path, blending alternative rock, R&B, and punk influences into her music. Her boldness as a young artist and the lesson she taught her father that day continue to resonate—a reminder that sometimes, the loudest statement is made in silence.
