Lawsuit against the hip-hop mogul is voluntarily dropped, but Combs remains entangled in over 40 civil cases.
Jay-Z is calling it a “victory” after a lawsuit accusing him and Sean “Diddy” Combs of rape was voluntarily dismissed. The lawsuit, filed by an anonymous woman known as Jane Doe, accused the two rap icons of sexually assaulting her at a party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards when she was just 13 years old.
On Friday, Feb. 14, attorneys representing Doe officially withdrew the lawsuit, filing a voluntary dismissal “with prejudice” in a New York court. The case cannot be refiled.
Jay-Z Speaks Out: ‘The Trauma Can Never Be Dismissed’
Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) issued a statement through Roc Nation’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing his relief while condemning the damage done by the accusations.
“Today is a victory. The frivolous, fictitious, and appalling allegations have been dismissed. This civil suit was without merit and never going anywhere. The fictional tale they created was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims. I would not wish this experience on anyone. The trauma that my wife, my children, loved ones, and I have endured can never be dismissed.”
His attorney, Alex Spiro, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Jay-Z never paid a settlement and stood firm against the accusations.
“The false case against JAY-Z, that never should have been brought, has been dismissed with prejudice. By standing up in the face of heinous and false allegations, Jay has done what few can – he pushed back, he never settled, he never paid one red penny, he triumphed and cleared his name.”
The Lawsuit’s Origins and Controversial Claims
The lawsuit was initially filed in October 2024 against Combs, with Jay-Z’s name added two months later. Doe alleged that she was driven to an afterparty in New York City following the 2000 VMAs, where she was drugged and raped by both men while another unnamed female celebrity watched.
However, inconsistencies in her account came to light. According to court records, Doe’s own father contradicted her claim that he picked her up after the alleged assault, and musician Benji Madden—whom she said she spoke to at the party—stated that he was not in New York at the time. Additionally, photographic evidence placed Jay-Z and Combs at separate locations during the event, though their whereabouts for the entire evening remain unclear.
In December 2024, Doe told NBC News that she had “made some mistakes” in her recollection of the events but maintained that her allegations were true.
Diddy’s Legal Woes Continue
While Jay-Z is now free of legal entanglement, Combs remains at the center of a storm of lawsuits. The embattled music mogul is currently facing over 40 civil cases, many of them involving allegations of sex trafficking and sexual misconduct. Since September 2024, Combs has been in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, awaiting trial on racketeering and sex trafficking charges. His trial is set to begin in May 2025.
Combs’ legal team has consistently denied the allegations against him. Following the dismissal of the case against Jay-Z, a spokesperson for Combs stated:
“Today’s complete dismissal without a settlement is yet another confirmation that these lawsuits are built on falsehoods, not facts. For months, we have seen case after case filed by individuals hiding behind anonymity, pushed forward by an attorney more focused on media headlines than legal merit. Just like this claim, the others will fall apart because there is no truth to them.”
A Broken System? Jay-Z Demands Accountability
Despite celebrating his legal victory, Jay-Z also criticized what he sees as a flawed system that allows high-profile individuals to be accused without substantial evidence.
“This 1-800 lawyer gets to file a suit hiding behind Jane Doe, and when they quickly realize that the money grab is going to fail, they get to walk away with no repercussions. The system has failed. The court must protect victims, OF COURSE, while with the same ethical responsibility, the courts must protect the innocent from being accused without a shred of evidence. May the truth prevail for all victims and those falsely accused equally.”
With the case against Jay-Z officially dismissed, the rapper can move forward, but the legal battles surrounding Diddy are far from over. The music industry continues to grapple with serious allegations against some of its most powerful figures, raising ongoing debates about justice, accountability, and the power of public scrutiny.
