Los Angeles DA Cites Statute of Limitations and Insufficient Evidence After Four-Year Investigation
After a four-year investigation into allegations of rape and domestic violence, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that Marilyn Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, will not face criminal charges. The decision was revealed Friday by District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman, citing expired statutes of limitations for domestic violence claims and insufficient evidence to pursue sexual assault charges.
A Lengthy Investigation Concludes
The allegations against the 56-year-old shock rocker, known for his provocative stage persona, were initially investigated by the DA’s Sex Crimes Division in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“We recognize and applaud the courage and resilience of the women who came forward to make reports and share their experiences,” the DA’s office said in a statement. “While we are unable to bring charges in this matter, the strong advocacy of the women involved has helped bring greater awareness to the challenges faced by survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault.”

Hochman’s office reiterated its commitment to seeking justice for survivors, urging individuals experiencing abuse to promptly report their cases to law enforcement.
Manson’s Legal Team Responds
Howard King, Manson’s attorney, responded to the DA’s decision in a statement to Entertainment Weekly, expressing satisfaction with the outcome. “We are very pleased that, after a thorough and incredibly lengthy review of all the actual evidence, the District Attorney has concluded what we knew and expressed from the start: Brian Warner is innocent.”
Accusations and High-Profile Lawsuits
The allegations against Manson, brought forth by multiple women, include claims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and psychological abuse.
- Evan Rachel Wood: Manson’s former fiancée publicly accused him in 2021 of grooming her as a teenager and subjecting her to years of abuse during their relationship. In the HBO documentary Phoenix Rising, Wood alleged that Manson “essentially raped” her during the filming of his “Heart-Shaped Glasses” music video. Manson filed a defamation lawsuit against Wood in 2022 but later dropped it in 2023, agreeing to cover her legal fees.
- Esmé Bianco: The Game of Thrones actress accused Manson of sexual assault and human trafficking in a 2021 civil lawsuit, which was later settled in 2023.

Survivors React to DA’s Decision
Bianco expressed disappointment in the justice system following the DA’s announcement but maintained a message of empowerment.
“Once again, our justice system has failed survivors,” Bianco wrote on social media. “My healing and peace could not be reliant upon the outcome of a desperately broken system.” She ended her statement with a message directed at Manson: “By you dragging me through hell, I discovered the unstoppable force of my own power.”
Representatives for Wood did not provide a comment following the announcement.
Ongoing Discussions About Justice for Survivors
This case highlights the complexities of prosecuting sexual assault and domestic violence allegations, particularly when hindered by expired statutes of limitations or insufficient evidence. While Manson has consistently denied all allegations, calling them “horrible distortions of reality,” the public discourse surrounding his case has amplified discussions about systemic barriers faced by survivors seeking justice.
As the legal chapter closes for Manson, advocates hope the courage of those who spoke out will continue to inspire reforms and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges survivors endure in their pursuit of justice.
