CNN Denies Allegations by Sean Combs’ Lawyers: Network Refutes Claims of Video Alteration in Criminal Trial

Legal Battle Escalates as Sean Combs' Lawyers Accuse CNN of Altering and Destroying Key Surveillance Footage in Abuse Case

CNN Pushes Back Against Diddy’s Lawyers’ Accusations of Video Tampering, Denying Destruction of Original Footage in Abuse Case

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ongoing legal battles have taken another dramatic turn as the music mogul’s lawyers have accused CNN of tampering with crucial surveillance footage from a 2016 incident involving his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura. The footage, which shows Combs allegedly assaulting Ventura at a Los Angeles hotel, was pivotal in the prosecution’s case for Combs’ upcoming federal trial.

In a joint letter filed Thursday, Combs’ legal team and his prosecutors claimed that CNN had “substantially altered” the hotel surveillance video. They argued that the network edited the footage to distort its timing and sequence, even going as far as accusing CNN of destroying the original video file after it was purchased from its source. These alterations, Combs’ attorneys argued, render the video inaccurate and unfairly misleading in the context of the criminal trial.

CNN, however, quickly shot down these accusations, issuing a statement strongly refuting the claims. The network emphasized that it “never altered the video” and had not destroyed any footage. A CNN spokesperson clarified, “CNN aired the story about the video several months before Combs was arrested,” and further assured that the original video had been retained by its source.

This back-and-forth over video evidence comes as Combs, 54, faces a variety of serious charges in his criminal trial, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution. Despite this, the 2016 surveillance video, which shows Combs reportedly grabbing Ventura by the neck, throwing her to the ground, and kicking her near an elevator, is not directly related to the ongoing federal case. Instead, it forms part of the evidence in a separate matter involving accusations of physical abuse and rape.

Cassie Ventura, who filed a lawsuit against Combs in November 2023, has also publicly addressed the case. The lawsuit accuses Combs of sexual and physical abuse, claims which he has denied. Ventura eventually settled the case the day after it was filed. In response to the resurfaced video, her lawyer, Douglas H. Wigdor, stated that Combs’ arguments to exclude the footage from the trial are “disingenuous” and that he remains confident the video will be admitted into evidence.

For his part, Combs has publicly addressed the disturbing video. In an emotional video posted shortly after CNN released the footage, he expressed deep regret over his actions, calling them “inexcusable” and saying he had sought professional help and therapy in the aftermath. He also took full responsibility, saying, “I’m disgusted. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now.”

This controversy adds another layer to the complex legal situation facing the music mogul, who has not only been accused of abuse by Ventura but also faces a string of federal charges. As the legal battle unfolds, with his federal trial set to begin on May 5, 2025, Combs’ defense team is expected to continue challenging the validity of the evidence presented by CNN and others.

The legal implications of this new dispute over video evidence could have a significant impact on the proceedings, and all eyes will remain on how the court rules on the admissibility of this footage. The coming weeks will undoubtedly bring further developments in both the federal trial and the ongoing media battle over the case.

As Combs faces mounting legal and public scrutiny, it remains to be seen how the courts and public opinion will ultimately respond to the evolving narrative surrounding his past actions and the legal battles he is currently navigating.
