Exploring the Boundaries of Imagination and Philanthropy Through “The Journey of Tanis”
Christopher Laird has firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of science fiction. His debut novel, Origins, catapulted him to fame as it became a best-seller, spawning four equally successful sequels that captured the imaginations of readers worldwide. The Origins series, a blend of futuristic action and moral dilemmas, has even sparked discussions of a Hollywood adaptation—a testament to Laird’s storytelling genius.
But Laird’s creativity doesn’t stop at novels. His annual holiday play, The True Meaning of Christmas: From the Perspective of an Alien, showcases his ability to merge humor, cultural commentary, and science fiction in a unique and entertaining format. This play, inspired by the Origins universe, has become a beloved tradition for fans.

Now, Laird is taking the sci-fi genre by storm once again with his latest novel, The Journey of Tanis. This gripping thriller delves into the looming threat of a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) that could wipe out all life on Earth. At the heart of the story is Brianna Alsobrooks, a retired astronaut who is reluctantly thrust back into a high-stakes mission by a secretive government operation. What follows is a tale of conspiracy, political intrigue, and survival against all odds.
Critics have praised The Journey of Tanis for its intricate narrative, multi-dimensional characters, and Laird’s knack for weaving emotional depth into high-concept science fiction. Brianna Alsobrooks, in particular, stands out as a complex and compelling female lead, navigating a dangerous web of deception and uncovering hidden truths in the vast expanse of space.

Beyond his literary achievements, Christopher Laird is deeply committed to making a difference in the real world. In honor of his late sister, Elizabeth, he established a scholarship fund to support aspiring medical students. He also actively contributes to the Detroit Zoo and the Detroit Institute of Arts, reflecting his dedication to education and cultural enrichment.
With The Journey of Tanis, Laird continues to push the boundaries of science fiction while leaving a positive impact through his philanthropic efforts. He is not just a master storyteller but a humanitarian whose work inspires both on and off the page.

Interview Questions
Your debut series, Origins, has sparked discussions about a potential Hollywood adaptation. What excites you most about the possibility of seeing your work on the big screen?
Seeing my books on the big screen is a dream of mine. To see a story you created, to be actual breathing characters on screen is huge for me. Fans loved the books and wanted to see them on the big screen. We are closer to getting to that point right now.
Your latest novel, The Journey of Tanis, explores themes of survival and deception. What inspired you to write this story, and how did you craft the character of Brianna Alsobrooks?
I wanted to write a different story. I wanted to try something different to write about. We have all seen doomsday stories before, so I did not want to write something that has been rehashed. This is a doomsday story, but with an ending that no one can expect.

Your annual play, The True Meaning of Christmas: From the Perspective of an Alien, is such a unique concept. How did this spin-off from the Origins series come about?
I always wanted to do a stage play. So, I was able to write one and perform the play during the pandemic. Due to the pandemic, we did not have a live audience, so we recorded it on stage and showed it on pay per view. It was success and we run the play every year online so the whole world can watch. The play follows Xona Bari, the lead character in the Origins series, as she comes to earth to visit her human boyfriend, Monty with some news. During this time, she visits during December and is curious about the Christmas holiday. It is a comedy and they both find out what Christmas is about as Monty thought he knew but did not.

You’ve been named ‘Sexiest Author of the Year.’ How has this recognition shaped your relationship with fans and the literary community?
It is a humbling experience. I do have a large female fanbase and some have said they have never read science fiction before but enjoy it now. I think this will be great publicity for me, so it was a great honor to receive this distinction.
Your philanthropic work, including the scholarship fund in honor of your sister, highlights your commitment to giving back. How do these initiatives reflect your personal values?
I think it is important to give back. I want to leave this earth to be known as a great servant. I want to have given more than I have received. But doing the scholarship is important to me because my sister passed away before finishing her dream. By doing the fund, she can accomplish her dream though someone else a thousand times over. I am also passionate about art and the safety and well being of animals. So I contribute in causes that help I those areas as well.
What inspires your creative process, and how do you balance emotional depth with the high-concept storytelling that defines your novels?
Ideas can come from anywhere at any time. I must pay attention to my surroundings and be in tune with my environment. I also gain inspiration from the people I associate with. My brother Charles Laird and my childhood friend Chris Clinton and Levell Jackson. All are tremendous human beings and are just good people. Their ambition is off the charts. But their humanity is what makes them special.
