John Mulaney opens up about the role Olivia Munn played in his sobriety journey, including their unique approach to random drug tests and the challenges of starting a family amid recovery.

In a recent interview with GQ, comedian John Mulaney shared candid insights into his journey of sobriety and fatherhood, revealing how his wife, actress Olivia Munn, played a pivotal role in both. The couple’s relationship, which began shortly after Mulaney’s rehab stay in late 2020, has been marked by significant life changes, including Munn’s pregnancy with their first child, Malcolm, now 2.

Mulaney opened up about a “mini-intervention” Munn staged when she was six months pregnant, which led to their decision to implement a system of random drug testing. Mulaney explained that the ritual continues to this day, providing him with a sense of relief and confidence as he navigates his sobriety. “It’s like a relief,” he said. “I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind. Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”

Mulaney’s candid reflections about his recovery journey are familiar to fans who have followed his path from addiction to sobriety. In his Emmy-winning 2023 Netflix special Baby J, he opened up about his struggles with drug abuse, relapsing at the end of 2020 and checking into rehab. This period was also marked by a public separation from his wife, Anna Marie Tendler, and his subsequent relationship with Munn, which garnered significant media attention. However, Mulaney now reflects on that tumultuous period with a sense of distance and understanding, saying, “You might think this is bullshit, but it feels very distant.”

Munn, for her part, shared the challenges she faced in supporting Mulaney through his recovery, describing his post-rehab state as “like watching a man in a tsunami.” She admitted that she didn’t know him well enough at the time to fully understand how to help him, but their connection and shared decision to raise their son together ultimately led them to co-parent as a couple. They later wed in the summer, and welcomed their second child, Mei, via surrogate in September 2024.

Mulaney and Munn’s story is one of resilience and love, with Mulaney recognizing that his sobriety journey is an ongoing process. As the couple continues to navigate parenthood and their evolving relationship, they remain committed to supporting one another, particularly through the unique challenges of life after addiction.

In addition to his personal milestones, Mulaney has also returned to his comedy roots, recently hosting Saturday Night Live for the sixth time. His influence on the series is undeniable, having contributed to some of the show’s most memorable sketches during his tenure as a writer from 2008 to 2013.

As Mulaney balances fatherhood, sobriety, and his career, he remains a poignant example of personal growth and transformation, with Munn by his side as a steady source of support.
