DJ Qualls Opens Up About Coming Out: “I Deserve Respect Because I Give It”

"Supernatural" Star DJ Qualls Discusses Overcoming Homophobia in Hollywood and the Power of Self-Acceptance

The “Supernatural” Actor Reflects on His Journey to Authenticity and the Impact of Homophobic Remarks in Hollywood

DJ Qualls, known for his memorable roles in “Supernatural,” “Road Trip,” and “The Core,” recently shared his candid journey of coming out during an appearance on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast. While Qualls had been open about his sexuality since his late teens, he struggled to do so within the confines of Hollywood, a place he initially found unwelcoming.

Reflecting on his experiences, Qualls revealed that overhearing homophobic comments on set became a turning point for him. “I’ve been out since 19 or 18, but not here because it wasn’t cool when I got here,” he stated, referring to the hostile environment that often permeated the industry. He recalled an incident from his first press junket where a prominent executive producer dismissed actor Seann William Scott based on unfounded assumptions about his sexuality, encapsulating the toxic culture prevalent in Hollywood at the time.

Qualls recalled the moment that prompted him to come out at work in 2015: “Why should I have to be at craft service and hear a bunch of homophobic sh– wrecking my day?” This realization emboldened him to own his space and demand respect, stating, “I’m there to do a job. I’m hired because I do that job well, and I deserve respect because I give it.”

Though he refrained from correcting his colleagues publicly, Qualls made it clear he would privately assert his identity. “I definitely will pull you aside and say, ‘Hey, I’m gay,’” he affirmed, emphasizing the importance of establishing boundaries in a predominantly male environment that often trivialized the impact of their words.

Qualls publicly came out during a 2020 appearance on Comedy Central’s The Jim Jefferies Show, where he proclaimed, “Yep, I’m gay. Been gay this whole time. Tired of worrying about what people would think of me.” His candid announcement marked a significant shift in his life, liberating him from years of fear and concern over how his sexuality might affect his career.

In the podcast, Qualls drew a parallel between his character Garth Fitzgerald in Supernatural and his own journey of self-acceptance. “Garth is also ‘other’ in this world, and he loves these people that he wants to love him back,” he explained, highlighting the universal struggle for acceptance that transcends both fiction and reality.

In May, Qualls shared the joyous news of his engagement to fellow Supernatural actor Ty Olsson, a relationship that blossomed at a fan convention for the series. As he continues to navigate his life and career with authenticity, Qualls stands as a testament to the power of self-acceptance in an ever-evolving industry.

DJ Qualls’ story serves as a reminder of the importance of respect, understanding, and the courage it takes to be oneself, both on and off the screen.
