"Comedy Icon George Lopez Bids Farewell to Stand-Up, Shifts Focus to Family and New Ventures"

The Comedy Legend Reflects on His Career, Prioritizes Family, and Hints at a New Chapter After Decades of Laughter

George Lopez, one of comedy’s most influential figures, has announced his retirement from stand-up comedy, marking the end of an era in the world of entertainment. In a recent appearance on Tamron Hall’s talk show, he revealed that his upcoming Amazon Prime special will be his last, joking, “I’ve subjected the American people to enough of my crap.”

Lopez, 63, expressed that it feels like the right time to step back. “It’s been the one thing that has just never left me my whole life, and it’s a wonderful place to leave it at this particular point,” he shared. This decision comes as he seeks to dedicate more time to family, particularly his daughter, Mayan, who co-stars with him on the NBC comedy Lopez vs. Lopez. “I want to spend more time with her,” he said, emphasizing the importance of family in this new chapter of his life.

The forthcoming comedy special, filmed at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on September 27 and 28, is part of his ALLLRIIIIGHHTTT! comedy tour. It follows his previous special, We’ll Do It for Half, released on Netflix in 2020. Throughout his career, Lopez has been known for his groundbreaking specials, including America’s Mexican, Tall, Dark, and Chicano, It’s Not Me, It’s You, and The Wall for HBO.

Starting in the 1980s, Lopez navigated the stand-up scene, securing spots on major late-night shows like The Arsenio Hall Show and The Johnny Carson Show. His determination paid off in 2002 when he created the sitcom George Lopez, which ran for six successful seasons on ABC and earned him a Creative Arts Emmy Award in 2005. Furthermore, he made history as the first Mexican American to host an English-language late-night show with Lopez Tonight, which premiered on TBS in 2009.

As he retires from stand-up, Lopez leaves behind a legacy filled with laughter and groundbreaking achievements. With the third season of Lopez vs. Lopez set to premiere on October 18, fans can look forward to enjoying his unique brand of humor in the series that continues to capture the complexities of family life.
