Sum 41 Frontman Recounts Emotional Moments and Lessons in New Memoir, “Walking Disaster”
In his newly released memoir, Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven and Hell, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley opens up about his brief but significant relationship with Paris Hilton in 2003, recalling the emotional turmoil she faced when rumors began to surface about the release of a sex tape featuring her.
Whibley shares that toward the end of their relationship, Hilton became aware that her ex was planning to release the intimate footage. “She was doing everything she could to stop it from coming out,” he writes. However, despite her efforts, the tape was released six or seven months after they had broken up. Whibley describes reaching out to Hilton after the scandal erupted, offering support during a difficult time. “We had some sad conversations, and I listened to her cry about having to tell her parents about it,” he recalls.
While reflecting on those challenging moments, Whibley also praises Hilton’s resilience. “She’s a smart person, and it was great seeing how she turned that invasion of privacy into something that worked for her in the long run. Her advocacy is admirable.”
Whibley also recalls how Hilton took control of her narrative, using the scandal to her advantage and becoming a symbol of empowerment in the face of public scrutiny. “She definitely knew how to be the Mac. And most importantly, how to stay the Mac,” he adds, referencing an important piece of advice given to him early in his career by rapper Ice-T.
The rock star’s memoir sheds light on his journey through fame, personal challenges, and key relationships, offering readers a glimpse into the emotional moments that shaped his life and career.
