Garth Brooks Faces Lawsuit Alleging Rape and Battery by Former Hair and Makeup Artist

Country star denies allegations, calling lawsuit an attempt at extortion as legal proceedings loom

Country music icon denies accusations, calling them extortion and defamation as both sides prepare for legal battle

Grammy award-winning country star Garth Brooks is at the center of serious allegations as a former hair-and-makeup artist, identified as “Jane Roe,” has filed a lawsuit accusing him of rape and battery. The 27-page complaint, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, details disturbing allegations of sexual assault dating back to 2017, when the plaintiff began working for Brooks, and describes a pattern of abuse throughout her employment.

Roe, who had worked for Brooks’ wife, Trisha Yearwood, since 1999, claims that Brooks repeatedly exposed himself, coerced her into unwanted sexual contact, and raped her on multiple occasions. The lawsuit accuses Brooks of using his position of power to exploit Roe’s financial vulnerabilities and of creating a hostile work environment where explicit sexual comments were allegedly common, even in the presence of his wife and associates.

Details of the Allegations

The complaint alleges that in 2019, Brooks invited Roe to his home to style his hair and makeup, where he greeted her completely naked and with an erection, forcing her to touch him. Later that year, during a trip to Los Angeles for a Grammy tribute to Sam Moore, Brooks allegedly booked a hotel room with only one bed and raped Roe. The lawsuit describes the assault as “painful and traumatic,” after which she was forced to resume her work.

Additional incidents of harassment are cited in the complaint, including a moment in 2020 when Brooks reportedly joked about creating a “shampoo bottle that would double as a dildo” in front of Roe, Yearwood, and his manager. Following this, Roe expressed her discomfort in a text message, stating that she no longer felt safe in her working environment and was “a little frightened” of Brooks.

The lawsuit lists six causes of action, including assault, sexual battery, and violations of both the Bane and Ralph Acts, which are designed to protect individuals from threats and acts of violence.

Brooks Responds: Claims of Extortion

In response to the lawsuit, Brooks has denied the allegations, issuing a public statement accusing Roe of attempting to extort millions of dollars from him. He acknowledged that he had filed a separate, anonymous lawsuit in September, aimed at countering what he called false claims before they became public. Brooks labeled himself the “victim” of an extortionist seeking to damage his career for personal gain, stating that he had faced months of “threats, lies, and tragic tales” demanding hush money.

In his statement, Brooks declared, “Hush money, no matter how much or how little, is still hush money. In my mind, that means I am admitting to behavior I am incapable of—ugly acts no human should ever do to another.” He expressed confidence in the legal system, asserting, “I trust the system, I do not fear the truth, and I am not the man they have painted me to be.”

Legal Proceedings Ahead

Roe’s legal team, represented by attorneys Douglas H. Wigdor, Jeanne M. Christensen, and Hayley Baker, issued a statement supporting their client’s decision to move forward with the lawsuit. The attorneys praised her courage, emphasizing that sexual predators exist across industries, including country music, and said they were “confident that Brooks will be held accountable for his actions.”

They further criticized Brooks’ preemptive lawsuit as an “act of desperation and intimidation” designed to silence their client. The team encouraged other potential victims to come forward, stating, “No survivor should suffer in silence.”

The Road Ahead

This lawsuit adds another layer to the public scrutiny surrounding Brooks, who has long been a revered figure in country music. As the legal proceedings unfold, both sides will face a highly publicized trial, with Brooks defending his reputation against serious accusations. The case underscores the ongoing conversation about abuse in the entertainment industry, where power dynamics can often conceal misconduct.

As the country music world watches this case closely, Garth Brooks’ legacy may hang in the balance.
